Gonubie, East London – Durban surfer Slade Prestwich was a multiple winner at the Billabong Junior Series in East London, racking up the lion’s share of the points and prizemoney on offer. In a tough U20 final, Slade was trailing behind a dominant Steven Sawyer from Jeffreys Bay before he stroked into a wide set wave and went to town on what was the highest scoring wave of the heat. The wave opened up for Slade, and after a big foam climb he strung together a series of powerful turns to impress the judges and jump into the lead. “I was lucky to get that wave,” said Slade. “Steven was out of position and I took off in the white-water and managed a few good turns.” The U20 win saw Slade pocket R10k. On top of that, Slade also won the VonZipper Flair Up Award of R10k for the Best Aerial for a big Air Reverse he pulled off in an earlier heat. Slade also won the Nixon Winner Takes All Award of an engraved Nixon Watch for the Highest Heat Score of 16.25 points out of a possible 20, making him the most successful surfer of the tournament.

Sarah Baum was the winner of the U20 Girls division and also took home R10k. The Durban-based goofy-footer has been traveling and competing on the WQS, and hasn’t been home and competing for some time. “I haven’t surfed in a contest in South Africa for so long. It was good to be competing at home again,” said Baum. “The waves were fun, and it has been a great event.” Sarah is home in South Africa until the Women’s WQS kicks off again in August. “I’ll be putting the money towards a car,” said Baum. “I plan on doing some traveling and surfing in South Africa over the next few months.”

Max Armstrong was the winner of the DaKine Youthful Movement Award of R10k for the Most Progressive Wave surfed during the event for a massive air 360 performed earlier in the day.

The tournament had a somewhat difficult start when the muncipality was forced to close the contest venue of Nahoon Beach due to sewage runoff from a burst pipe caused by the heavy rains over the Easter weekend. Luckily for all, Gonubie was chosen as the alternate venue by contest director Cyril Nel, and what a good choice that proved to be. Gonubie delivered great waves, ranging in the two to three-foot range all weekend, ideal for high action surfing from the country’s best junior surfers. The sun poured down the whole weekend, and the wind forgot to blow.

Shane Sykes from Salt Rock was a very stoked winner of the U16 Boys division. “I havent had a good win in quite some time now,” said Shane in his post-final interview. “I picked up a few good waves in the beginning of the heat and got some good scores for them. I’m happy to have won it.”

In the U18 Girls it was Chanelle Botha who took the win for the second time, repeating her performance from the first event in Durban. Kai Woolf from Jbay won the U14 Girls division convincingly, Josh Smit won the U18 Boys, Adin Masencamp won the U14 Boys and Max Elkington was the winner in the U12 Boys division.

The next event in the Billabong Junior Series will be held in Kommetjie, Cape Town in August. The Billabong Junior Series is presented by BOS and Sony.

The longest running Junior Surfing Series in the country, the Billabong Junior Series, is set to return with some exciting format changes and massive prizes in the mix. The series carries on the proud tradition set by Billabong that has already seen 43 events take place and almost R1Million awarded in prize money over the last 16 years.

This year the series is presented by Bos Iced Tea, and they are excited to be involved in this, the premier Junior Surfing Series in the country. “Bos has been sponsoring Billabong big wave surfer, Twiggy Baker, for the last 2 years. We share his passion for surfing, adventure and exploration – continually pushing boundaries in the search for fresh experiences,” says Marié van Niekerk, Bos Marketing Director. “We are delighted for the opportunity to support and get involved in surfing at a grassroots level. Events like the Billabong Junior Series is where the future surf pro’s are shaping their careers and it’s very exciting to be part of this journey.”

The 2013 series will comprise Boys U12, U14, U16 and U18 divisions, as well as Girls U14 and U18 divisions. There is also an elite U20 invite-only division, with surfers selected via online voting. Six of South Africa’s top U20 surfers will be invited to compete in each event. They will be joined by the winner of the U16 and U18 divisions for boys, and the winner and runner-up in the U18 division for girls, to make up the 8 surfers in this category. The series will be awarding R750,000 in money, prizes and giveaways. The prize money distribution is unique, and the allocation is thus:

- One Prize per division – winner takes all.

- U20 Girls and Boys R10k each
- U18 Girls and Boys R5k each
- U16 Boys R5k
- U14 Boys and Girls R2,5k each
- U12 Boys R2,5k

- Specialty Prizes.

On top of this, Billabong will be awarding two Specialty Prizes for the Best Aerial and for the Most Progressive Wave per event, with both prizes worth R10k each. The Billabong Junior Series is a stepping stone between junior surfing and professional surfing, and Billabong recognises that progressive surfing and aerial moves are imperative for a successful professional career.

- Billabong Sponsorships.

In another innovative concept, Billabong will also be offering six one-year sponsorship contracts to the series winners in each division. Should the series winner turn down the sponsorship offer, the prize will be offered to the next deserving surfer. The sponsorships include, coaching, photo incentives, contest entry fees, contest incentives and product across the Billabong brands, coming in at a value of R75k per sponsorship. Billabong brands involved in the sponsorships include Billabong, DaKine, VonZipper, Kustom and Kinetic Racing Fins.

Nixon will also be on board as a product sponsor for the series.

- Bos Surfer Of The Series award.

This award will go to the surfer who has performed the most consistently across the whole series. It will be open for entries from all divisions and the winner will walk away with a 20K overall prize consisting of R10K cash, a custom made Bos surf board, special Bos merchandise and a year’s supply of Bos Ice Tea.

- All Aboard Travel Sportsmanship Award

All Aboard Travel will present a Sportsmanship Award to one surfer displaying the best sportsmanship throughout the series, at the series prizegiving. This prize will comprise a return ticket and four nights accommodation in Bali, Indonesia, valued at R17k.

The series will enjoy extensive media coverage across many platforms, including print media, web, social media and television.

The Billabong Junior Series is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa event. National PST Points will be allocated to each division as per Surfing South Africa guidelines. There will be no PST points allocated in the U20 division as it is by invite only. Surfing South Africa is recognised by the South African Sports Confederation (SASCOC) as the governing body of the sport in South Africa.

4. Oppi Koppi

5. BOS Rocking the Daisies

Another year, another Daisies and we loved every second!

6. BOS Sessions

We also launched BOS Sessions this year, at Rocking the Daisies, as a result of the great organic “stage” that popped up at our BOSsewa during Oppi Koppi. We wanted to create a platform for young musicians to have a very intimate experience with their fans. The result was exactly what we hoped for, and we’re so excited about all the BOS Sessions still to come!

7. The Plastics likes BOS

After The Plastics was so kind to join us with their presence at the first BOS Sessions we wanted to be their friends for good, and we’re very glad we could make it a “formal” friendship. BOS is now officially one of The Plastic’s sponsors. Cheers boys!

8. More tea for you and me

2012 = BOS 1 L’s. This was another big highlight for us. Launching the long awaited 1 L’s in Peach, Apple and Lemon. Their available at Woolworths and selected Spar & Pick ‘n Pay’s. In keeping with our sustainable style, we’ve opted for the Tetra Prisma packaging. Read more about the 1L’s here. Go get ‘em.

9. Beautiful, Berry.

Hallo Berry. Another great addition to our 275ml can range, BOS Berry. If you haven’t tried it then you’re seriously missing out.

10. BOS at The Green Expo

This was also the first year that BOS took part at the Green Expo in Cape Town. We used recycled cans, and Xinita board to create a one of a kind stand by the great Haldane Martin.

11. We love you Namibia

Towards the end of 2012 BOS launched in Namibia with the help of Namibia Dairies. So to all our lovely friends up there, enjoy!

12. Good Food & Wine (DURBAN) award.

Another great achievement for us, was the Gold award we won at the Good Food & Wine (DBN) show for most interactive stand.

Overall it was an amazing year for us and we couldn’t have done it without all our BOS fans! Thanks everyone, and cheers to 2013! We know it will only get better…

BOS Earthwave Beach Festival

Guinness World Record attempt + Ocean & Beach events

Sustainable lifestyle event

Surfer’s Corner, Muizenberg, Cape Town

Saturday & Sunday, 29 & 30 September 2012

Far more than just wave-riding at BOS Earthwave Beach Festival this weekend

There will be far more than just wave-riding at the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival at Muizenberg this weekend and those attending the fifth edition of the sustainable lifestyles event can enjoy and participate in a wide range of fun-filled and informative beach sports and activities.

Alongside the attempts to set world records for ‘longest line of surfboards on a beach’ on Saturday and the ‘most surfers riding the same wave’ on Sunday are paddle races and touch rugby, a treasure hunt and beach cleanups, blood and ear testing, skincare advice, land paddling demos, celebrity autograph sessions, fund raising for worthy causes, give-aways, two after-parties and environmental talks and presentations.

The highlight of the environmental program is a presentation by renowned conservationist and extreme adventurer Braam Malherbe at 11am on Saturday. This motivational speaker, youth developer and TV presenter who ran the Great Wall of China for Operation Smile will elaborate on how we all need to DO ONE THING to make a difference for our environment!

There will also be videos on environmental talks and plenty of materials on sustainable lifestyle options from Greenpop, the City of Cape Town’s Environmental departments and WWF, while Tuffy have donated recyclable bags for the twice daily beach cleanups where those collecting the most rubbish earn prizes.

Spatone, the natural mineral-water-based iron supplement and sponsors of the medical facilities at the festival are offering FREE iron and glucose testing for athletes and spectators daily. MichaelGamePlan, the first CANSA endorsed men’s product in South Africa, is providing skincare advice and hampers of products on both days and Wavescape.co.za, SA’s foremost surfing portal, brings well-known ear, nose and throat expert Dr John Steer to conduct tests and give advice on ‘surfers ear’ on Sunday.

The marquee tent, where registration for the world record attempts takes place, will also host awareness and fund raising for the Sunflower Fund, whose Bandana Day is on 12 October, and the Shark Spotters who do so much to protect ocean users from apex predators but whose operations are only partially funded by local authorities.

The tent is also the venue for an autograph and poster signing session on Sunday featuring South African super-models Tracy McGregor and Leigh-Ann Roberts, both of whom have graced the cover of Playboy SA in 2012. The girls will be promoting the latest swimwear range from Fondle clothing, designed by Tracy, and we hope to see them gracing the waves during the Guinness World Record attempt too.

The inaugural People’s Post Touch Rugby Challenge is an invitational eight-team tournament on Sunday morning and the BOS Dig for Gold treasure hunt where hordes of kids comb the beach sand for prizes totaling thousands of Rand is scheduled for 12 noon the same day, just before the participants line-up for the attempt to set a new record for the number of surfers riding the same wave.

Demos and trials of the latest Land Paddling equipment from Kahuna Creations will run throughout the weekend, with one of the paddles up for grabs, and for those who want to try surfing for the first time there will be free Introduction to Surfing lessons available from Surf Emporium and Lifestyle Surf Shop.

The waves will be filled on both days with the region’s best young surfers in the Surf Emporium WP Inter-schools Champs, which includes a Surfing South Africa transformation project and the Battle of the Waves where all proceeds go to the Shark Spotters. The men’s final of the New Balance WP Longboard Champs will be run on Sunday morning to showcase the top local riders.

And for those watermen and women who would like to make history by being the country’s first tandem surfing champions, the inaugural Similasan Tandem Surfing Champs will see couples performing acrobatic lifts and poses as they ride the same surfboard. Anyone keen of participating in this event, which has unique handcrafted trophies and hampers of the sponsor’s homeopathic treatment for swimmer’s ear on offer, can enter for free via kahunasurf@mweb.co.za

Another exciting new addition to the festival is the Coreban SUP Classic where stand up paddlers and surfskis will race from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay and / or Fish Hoek and back, depending on conditions. This demanding race will bring out the best in the burgeoning SUP community.

All these activities take place at surfers Corner on Muizenberg Beach, voted one of the world’s 20 top surf towns by National Geographic and undoubtedly one of the planet’s premier places to learn to surf. And thanks to the generous support of brands like BOS Ice Tea; Fondle; DaKine; Zigzag Magazine; Billabong; Rafikis; Von Zipper; Derevko Wetsuits; Kauai; Sector 9; MichaelGamePlan; Palmers and Kahuna Creations there will be heaps of valuable prizes to win while you’re there.

And when the beach action is over for the day, join the crowds at the official after-parties at Rafikis Restaurant in Kloofnek Rd in the city on Saturday night and at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay on the Sunday where the official results of the world record attempts will be announced.

For the latest information of the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival go to www.facebook.com/BOS.Earthwave where you can find information, images and videos on how to become part of the activities.

Exciting line-up of events at BOS Earthwave Beach Festival at Muizenberg in September

The BOS Earthwave Beach Festival, where an attempt will be made to break the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding the same wave’, will feature an exciting line-up of events in wave-riding, paddling, running and beach sports at Muizenberg on the weekend of 29 & 30 September 2012.

The highlight of the festival will be the attempt on the Guinness World Record and any surfer who can stand up and ride for more than 5 seconds is invited to join in to try and surpass the current record of 110 set during the 2009 Earthwave festival at Muizenberg.

This year sees the introduction of the two-day Surf Emporium WP Inter-schools Surfing Championships which will feature the top surfers from Peninsula schools who will also compete in the Bomb Expression Session. There will be plenty of action for beginners and beachgoers in the Community Surfing Initiative and Free Introductory Surf Sessions where anyone can learn how to catch and ride a wave.

The country’s top longboard surfers will again be in action in the Western Province Longboard Surfing Championships, with the finals for the Open Men and Women taking place at the festival site shortly before the paddle-out for the GWR attempt.

Stand Up Paddlers (SUP) will be well catered for in the inaugural Coreban SUP Races which will see paddlers racing from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay or Fish Hoek and back (weather and conditions permitting) and around-the-cans in the surfline, along with displays and the opportunity to try out the latest state-of-art equipment.

Beach activities will be boosted by the running of the first ever New Balance Beach Run which is open to all athletes and follows a fast out-and-back course from Muizenberg along Strandfontein beach at low tide. Contact Top Events for further details.

There will also be an eight-team Touch Rugby tournament organized by In2Touch, the BOS Dig For Gold where prizes totaling thousands of Rand are buried in the sand and development initiatives for those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

And the action does not stop there as negotiations are in progress to stage a Beach Volleyball tournament, Skateboarding and BMX events, beach sports for children and attempts to break other Guinness World Records at the festival.

All the activities at the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival take place alongside exhibitions and displays of the latest outdoor products and services with presentations by experts on environmental awareness and sustainable lifestyle choices.

The Bos animals spent this past Saturday, 30 June 2012, winning over the hearts of Nu Metro moviegoers at the V&A Waterfront while on a little safari.

As a special surprise to “Madagscar 3″ viewers the animals were there to give out Bos Ice Tea, hugs and wildlife tips.

It’s not everyday that you get to watch a movie with these guys, and the children couldn’t have been happier.

Naturally the kids weren’t the only ones who buddied up with the animals…

The animals had an amazing time roaming around and making new friends on their latest safari adventure. “It was great seeing Marty, my fellow lion, on screen. He’s pretty cool for a New Yorker.” Lion commented after leaving the cinema.

If you’re lucky you might catch them the next time that you visit Nu Metro, so keep your eyes open.
