How BOS’s Rooibos Farm became climate positive and what it means

What Is a Climate Positive Farm?

You’ve heard of “carbon neutral”. But climate positive takes things further: It means our farm doesn’t just cancel out its carbon footprint which means it actively removes more carbon from the atmosphere than it produces.

Thanks to over a decade of regenerative farming, Klipopmekaar now stores more carbon in its soil than it emits through farming, harvesting, and transporting rooibos across the globe.

This isn’t a carbon offset. It’s carbon captured, right at the root.

The Journey to Net-Zero and Beyond

To get here, Klipopmekaar partnered with Trace & Save, a respected sustainability organisation, to assess the farm’s full carbon cycle. From farm gate to shipping container, they measured it all.

The result? Net-positive emissions.

That means the land itself, through sustainable practices like cover cropping, soil management, and biodiversity preservation, is doing the heavy lifting and winning!

Even better? If current practices continue, the farm can supply net-zero rooibos tea for the next 80 years.
