If rooibos were a person, they might just be a saint. A bold statement, we know, but this delicious superfood beverage’s list of admirable qualities just seems never ending. Simply put, it’s crazy good. Good on the tastebuds, for sure, but also kind to the body, kind to the mind and definitely kind on our planet too!
In honour of World Kindness Day (13 November) we take a closer look at the many wonderful ways in which BOS Rooibos – and rooibos tea overall – is kind to our planet as well as its inhabitants.
1. Rooibos gives our precious planet a break
The hardy Aspalathus linearis shrub (commonly known as rooibos or red bush) can be found in South Africa’s wild and mountainous Cederberg region – and nowhere else on Earth. Don’t believe us? We’ve got the PDO to prove it.
Being grown in only one location on our planet means that, in order to cultivate rooibos, no precious trees are cut down to make space for thousands, or even millions of hectares of water-hungry plantations.
2. BOS Rooibos is committed to sustainability – and giving back to the environment
At BOS, we understand the importance of giving back, both to our people and to our environment. Our organic, hand-harvested rooibos is ethically and sustainably cultivated, in order to safeguard its unique habitat for generations to come.
What’s more, at BOS we are involved in a number of initiatives that support our vision of a sustainable future. Through our urban greening, reforestation and sustainable development partnership with Greenpop, BOS plants and maintains one tree for every 2000 units sold. To date, we’ve planted more than 32 000 trees.
BOS Organic Rooibos Tea has also been granted the Rainforest Alliance seal, something which allows consumers to recognise and select products that contribute toward a better and more sustainable future for our planet and its people.
3. Rooibos is an extremely versatile alternative to caffeine-laden hot and soft drinks
While caffeine does offer some cognitive benefits, it’s also a stimulant that can leave you feeling jittery, rob you of a great night’s rest and, more often than not, will leave you craving more.
In a fast-paced world, cutting down on caffeine could be an act of kindness to both your body and mind. Caffeine-free and packed with polyphenols that help reduce anxiety, rooibos is a healthy and delicious alternative to coffee and other caffeinated beverages.
In fact, caffeine-free rooibos is so beneficial for health and wellbeing that it can even be given (unsweetened, of course!) to babies over the age of three months.
4. BOS Rooibos Tea is 100% organic – as are our fully compostable teabags
Grown in the awe-inspiring wilderness that is South Africa’s Cederberg region, BOS Rooibos Tea is not just a nutrient-packed natural superfood, it is also 100% organic, which means it is kinder to both humans and the environment in which it is cultivated. What’s more, BOS teabags are made from CPLA, a 100% compostable and organic biopolymer derived from sugar cane waste.
5. Rooibos tea offers health benefits galore
Naturally sweet and caffeine-free, rooibos is packed with a range of health-boosting antioxidants and is rich in minerals and vitamins. With proven neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, rooibos has also been proven to lower those pesky stress hormone (aka cortisol) levels. But wait, there’s more…
Widely known as a local traditional health remedy, rooibos has been used by South Africa’s indigenous Khoi and San peoples to treat a variety of ailments for centuries. Many of rooibos’s powerful health benefits have since been backed by scientific research. In South Africa, this wonder beverage is even honoured with its very own national day.
6. BOS supports creativity, self-expression, and those who add colour to life
At BOS, we are always on the lookout for the unexpected, the extraordinary and the unbelievable. We believe in celebrating creativity and general creative goodness wherever we encounter it. And we love those individuals who inspire us to look at life differently and add some crazy good amazingness wherever they go.
There you have it, just six of the many ways that BOS Rooibos Tea (and rooibos in general) is kind to both our planet and its people!
