BOS Answers: 10 Funniest Questions People Ask About Rooibos Tea

Can I bath in rooibos tea? Answer to this and nine other amusing questions we've been asked about rooibos tea!

Rooibos tea is good for you, we all know this. But this doesn’t stop people from asking us some funny (sometimes hilarious) questions. Help with hangovers, battles with belly fat and the merits of steeping tea in cold water are all mysteries we are happy to assist in unravelling. Read on for the answers to 10 of the funniest questions we’ve recently been asked about rooibos tea.

1. I’m really hungover. Will rooibos tea help?

Oh yes, it will. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it rids your body of salts and water. To replace the water, the best hangover cure is a hydrant drink, and you don’t get much more hydrant than rooibos. While this miraculous herbal beverage won’t be able to, erm, erase your prize performance of the night before, it will go a long way with helping you through the next day.

2. Can I bath in rooibos tea?

Yes, you can. In fact, your skin will love you for it. Simply add 12 BOS Organic Rooibos Tea Bags to your warm bath, get in there, relax and enjoy! Rooibos herbal tea is perfect for soothing eczema and inflamed or sunburnt skin.

Bonus Rooibos Beauty Tip:

Rooibos contains an abundance of superoxide dismutase, an enzyme that’s a highly effective anti-ageing agent. This means that rooibos can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, while boosting the production of healthy skin cells.

3. My dog ate two rooibos teabags out of the compost heap. Will he be okay?

Let’s start with the good news. As a herbal drink, rooibos tea is caffeine free and generally safe for pets to consume. In fact, rooibos can even help aid your dog’s digestion! The not-so-good news? Teabags swallowed whole could get stuck in Fido’s intestines, causing a potentially life-threatening obstruction. The bottom line? If your dog ate a tea bag (or two!) don’t panic, call your vet and leave the treatment to a pro.

4. My daughter spilled BOS Watermelon & Mint tea and got some in her eyes. What should I do?

Natural, unsweetened, unflavoured rooibos tea can be very effective in treating red or inflamed eyes, as the anti-inflammatory properties in this herbal drink may assist in reducing the swelling or inflammation that goes with irritated eyes. Should you ever (unintentionally) end up with flavoured (anything from our BOS Rooibos Ice Tea range, for example) or unflavoured rooibos tea in your peepers, simply rinse them with cool, clean water and carry on with life!

5. How many BOS Rooibos Shots should I take in one day?

As a general rule of thumb, the recommended dose is one BOS Rooibos Shot daily. However, there’s no limit to the number of BOS Rooibos Shots you can or should consume in a day. Just keep in mind that each shot is packed with a variety of functional ingredients, and that they should be consumed according to your own preference.

The only BOS Rooibos Shot we recommend you treat with caution (when it comes to daily dosage) is our BOS Gut A Problem Probiotic Rooibos Shot. This variant combines brewed organic rooibos (a prebiotic superfood) with added probiotics to promote gut health. As each person is different, if you have a sensitive stomach, we recommend that you stick with one shot per day.

6. Why isn’t my rooibos teabag brewing in cold water?

Because rooibos needs to steep at 100°C. Various types of tea require steeping at different temperatures, and because rooibos doesn’t contain caffeine or (hardly any) tannins, brewing rooibos with boiling water for at least five to eight minutes (or simmering in a pot for 20 to 30 minutes) will help to draw out all those beneficial antioxidants and delicious flavours.

7. Why does my rooibos tea taste burnt after I microwaved it?

Ideally, tea should never be brewed in a microwave. Microwaving any liquid causes irregular heating which makes your cup dangerous to handle, as it could potentially explode and cause serious scalding and burns.

Microwaving tea can also make it taste funny, as ultra-hot water destroys the tea’s aromatic compounds while eliciting excessive bitter, astringent notes by overcooking the tea leaves. That’s why we recommend boiling the water for your rooibos tea in a kettle, or brewing it in a teapot like grandma used to do.

8. Will I get high if I have the CBD BOS Rooibos Shot?

Nope. Although CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are both derived from the cannabis sativa plant, CBD, unlike THC, will not get you high. However, CBD is known for its anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and anti-anxiety properties, and this may leave you feeling significantly more relaxed after consuming a CBD BOS Rooibos Shot.

9. Does rooibos tea help to reduce belly fat?

If you’ve been counting calories, you’ll be happy to know that rooibos tea is completely free of carbohydrates and fat, and that its weight-loss properties also include the inhibition of fat-storing hormones in the body.

Aspalathin, rooibos tea’s unique bioflavonoid aids with reducing the stress hormones that cause hunger and fat storage, which are typically associated with heart disease, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. In short, rooibos can prevent the body from storing fat cells, and even from forming new ones.

10. Will rooibos tea help my anxiety?

Rooibos tea is naturally caffeine free, which already goes a long way to keeping our bodies more relaxed. On top of that, the polyphenols in rooibos tea widens and relaxes blood vessels, which in turn helps to lower blood pressure and reduce levels of anxiety. What’s more, a 2021 study has shown that rooibos tea (in particular green or unfermented rooibos) may assist with reducing anxiety. This is because of rooibos’ anxiolytic properties, which means that it prevents or reduces the amount of anxiety an individual experiences.
